Testosterone is a male sex hormone, which women have in trace amounts under normal condition. Testosterone converts to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) with the aid of the enzyme - 5 - alpha reductase. Some of the DHT binding to receptors in scalp follicles. DHT shrinks hair follicles and cause healthy hair falling out.
During menopause, a woman's estrogen levels fall and is no longer in balance with DHT levels. This low estrogen level and high DHT supply situation lead to hair loss.
When a woman under stress, her adrenal glands become under active as a result of her increase need of stress hormone, cortisol. The body therefore secretes more adrenaline which leads to increased levels of testosterone and hence DHT.
