What are the possible causes for hair loss?

Stress can cause hair loss.

Stress can lead to an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in your body, skin or scalp. Free radicals are molecules with an uneven number of electrons. Free radicals are therefore constantly searching for an electron from another molecule to pair with. This interaction has now made the new molecule a free radical, causing a massive chain reaction where cells function poorly or die.  This is called oxidative stress. Antioxidants are molecules that can donate an electron to a free radical. This causes the free radical to stabilize and become less reactive. Stress can lead to the build up of free radicals, which contribute to gradual hair loss.

These powerful antioxidants must be supplied through improved diet or applied directly to the skin or scalp.

Poor blood circulation in the scalp causes hair loss.

If the blood circulation is inadequate, the hair cannot receive enough oxygen, blood, lymph and nutrients and the follicle shrinks causing hair loss.

Hormone level declines and DHT increase can cause hair loss

Testosterone is a male sex hormone, which women have in trace amounts under normal condition.  Testosterone converts to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) with the aid of the enzyme - 5 - alpha reductase. Some of the DHT binding to receptors in scalp follicles. DHT shrinks hair follicles and cause healthy hair falling out.

During menopause, a woman's estrogen levels fall and is no longer in balance with DHT levels. This low estrogen level and high DHT supply situation lead to hair loss.

When a woman under stress, her adrenal glands become under active as a result of her increase need of stress hormone, cortisol. The body therefore secretes more adrenaline which leads to increased levels of testosterone and hence DHT.
